Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California, in 1978 as “Women’s History Week,” aligning with International Women’s Day. The movement gained national momentum, and in 1980, advocacy led by the National Women’s History Project resulted in President Jimmy Carter proclaiming the first National Women’s History Week. The observance continued annually until 1987, when Congress passed a law officially designating March as Women’s History Month.
Northwest Missouri State University has celebrated March as Women’s History Month since 1987. Below are the events happening during the month.
